Some perform this automatically but cycling the charger off then on acheives the same. The final float mode allows them to be safely left connected continuously, although a cycle back through the full range of charge stages every couple of weeks is beneficial in reducing stratification of the electrolyte and eliminating sulphation. They all have at least three stages, bulk, timed absorb and float charge which are selected in turn automatically for charging. Smart multi-stage lead/acid battery chargers and lower power conditioners have been around for decades now. I have a CTEK unit, bought years ago when that was about the only option, but that Maypole unit looks good and is at a very attractive price. You don't need to know which one you need, the charger will figure out what the battery needs. ![]() This is exactly why those multi-mode smart chargers are such a great idea. If you have a classic car this will save you a fortune in car batteries and your pride and joy will always be ready to go. You can leave it connected to the battery for years, literally. It will switch itself off and monitor the battery charge, turning itself on again when the charge drops. It doesn't have the power to charge a duff battery but keeps it topped up when it is charged. This also does what it says on the tin, keeps the battery in good condition. Usually you can't leave it connected to the battery for any length of time after charging with out causing damage. Firstly, there is the battery charger, which does what it says on the tin, charges duff batteries. ![]() There are two devices which are not interchangeable.
